Yesterday at the grocery store I got to the check out counter and started unloading all of my groceries onto the belt for the man to check out. After the last item was on the belt, I started looking around for my purse. Oh dang--I left my purse in the car... AGAIN. That was the second time in a week where I did that! DUH! Luckily, Safeway has the best customer service around, and they are very kind to mothers like me who suffer from momnesia.
Have you ever heard of momnesia? After my Safeway experience, I had to stop and do some research. You can learn more about it by reading this article. Of course, take it with a grain of salt; I don't by any means think momnesia is a serious excuse for my forgetfulness. It was mostly a fun read and good to know that other moms want their brains back too!
Anyway, my mom & step-dad were the ones who told me about momnesia when they were in town last month. They had seen something on Good Morning America about it. We were all sitting around one night talking about the next day's plans. My mom asked, "What time do we need to leave?" And I responded, "Well, I like to be out the door when the big hand is on the 2." My mom & step-dad stared for a moment in amazement and then just started laughing that I spoke to them like they were 3 years old and couldn't tell time. We all shared a good laugh over how my brain is constantly trying to think on an infant to 4 year old level, and how I have to remember to switch back on the adult part of my brain when socializing with adults.
Another weird thing: I was driving the other night by myself. I was sitting at a red light admiring some apartment complexes and town homes that recently were built. I was thinking to myself, "Wow! Those sure were built fast! They look great for just being under construction!" Well, the light turned green and as I drove past the architecture I had been admiring, I realized that I had just driven past my own residence. DUH! I guess in my defense it was dark, but in all seriousness, how did my brain do that--completely not connect the fact that what I was looking at was my own place?
Momnesia, folks. :)

That is hilarious. I think it all starts with pregnancy and is downhill from there. I think my brain used to work efficiently, but maybe it never did and I have just forgotten!
PS - It has been my goal to comment first on one of your posts since we all love you and you always have 11 comments:) Did you see Annie's motivational poster on our blog?
I LOVE that term and plan on using it often. I have it really bad right now. Something about trying to graduate and move accross the state...
I would think the simple fact that we're carting young kids around is like walking down the street with a megaphone blaring "Crazy forgetful woman coming your way!!!"
But it's all for a good cause, right? :)
You crack me up. Now I have a name to explain my scatterbrained ways. Thanks for doing the research on that one--I'll put "momnesia" in my pocket and pull it out when I need it!
Natalie, you are too funny! I'm loving your blog.
I have that...whatever name you called it. I forgot
I love that! I suffer from the same disease!
my favorite was driving past your own place-hilarious.
Um yeah....That's me everyday!!!
I think my favorite part is you telling your mom what the big hand needs to be on. I do the same thing and I was laughing so hard. You are so funny and I really don't know how you do all that you do. You shouldn't be expected to remember EVERYTHING with three cute little ones!
So, so fun! You inspired me to pass on this article to my friends as well! I loved the clock story - I think I catch myself talking 4-year-old all the time and it is pretty funny.
