I didn't have my camera, but my sister fulfilled her familial duties by getting an action shot of me blowing out the candles. I bet that if I went through my mom's pictures back home, I could probably upload a "chipmunk-cheek-cross-eyed-blowing-out-the-candles" shot from every one of our birthdays. That is one classic shot the members of my family always seem to catch. :)
So lately I've been feeling my age (ha!) a bit. Even though I'm barely into the 30s, things just aren't what they used to be.
Here are a few things I've noticed:
1) Now on the exercise machines at the gym, my target heart-rate is at a lower range. Sad that the day before my birthday I still considered myself in the "20 year old" category. I guess I gotta be more gentle on my heart now that I'm in my older years.
2) I bought some "skinny jeans" the other day. Not that I consider myself skinny [to me, that word implies frail and wispy], but that's just the name of these kind of pants. So I heard they are in style or something, and I thought I'd try and be hip and fashionable.
Well, I brought them home and did a fashion show and the verdict was that I looked like I was trying to be a high school-er. Really, I felt so dumb. My 5'4" frame had these jeans all bunched up at the ankles, and they just weren't cute on my 30 year old mom body.
3) It's no secret to my local friends that very often I am caught around town without my makeup on. I usually take Whitney to school or get groceries without makeup and don't think twice about it. But lately while running those errands I have caught a glimpse of myself in the mirrors and nearly have a heart-attack when I see my non-makeup scary face! The circles under my eyes are darker, my eyes are beadier, the wrinkles are more defined, and my face is splotchy.
Don't you love this picture above? No, I haven't started growing hair on my chest since I turned 30. I did a google image search for "no makeup ugly" and this was one of the first images to pop up. I couldn't resist posting it to make my point that I can't NOT wear makeup around town anymore.
And story #4) Tyler got me a cute zip-up Hurley hoodie for Christmas. It was very thoughtful of him. However, he got me a size XL. It was super long in the arms and just not very flattering. Tyler couldn't believe it didn't fit! He explained that the "S" looked way too teeny, so he thought these were girls' sizes (like... for Whitney).
Anyway, so I went to PacSun to return the sweatshirt. When I brought it to the counter the girl said, "Is anything wrong with it?" I said, "No, it was a gift from my husband.......just the wrong size." She looked at the sweatshirt and then back at me and said, "Yeah, isn't this a little too young for you?" I about died. Come on, it's not like I'm a great-grandma or something!! I didn't even have the kids with me for her to know that I was a frumpy old mom! I think I was even wearing makeup too! Stinks to be 30!

HAHAH! ya RIGHT! She did NOT say that! What a little brat! I would've slapped her. You do not look 30. At all. And that picture of Rosie is hideous. I would love to slap her too. Ha. Happy Birthday hot mama!
OH, I am going to join you this year and I am totally feeling it too. Don't remind me of all the wonderful things that are going to happen. But we're not THAT old, are we? You are so cute, I love reading your post. Ugly Rosie, hopefully we don't get hair like that! Happy late birthday!
Oh my gosh Natalie! I CANNOT believe she said that to you! You are too funny! I hyad no idea you were thirty...you look way younger! (Or maybe it's just that I am so much older!) I thought I weas going to die when I turned 30 but Scott took our family on a surprise trip to Hawaii. (Seriously, he told me 2 days before we were leaving!) It made the whole transition a lot easier. I think you need to go to Hawaii. You'll feel much better!
Okay, the Pac Sun girl's comment would be mortifying! Love your update, as usual, Nat. Enjoy 30 and embrace the aging process: it happens to everybody, and you're one of the more adorable ones it happens to. Love, Anj
Yikes, I predict PacSun girl will be fired soon. And to make you feel better, I put makeup on about once a week, for church! But I feel the same way when I catch glimpses of myself, "Who is that old bag?" At least we don't feel that way. You're only as old as you feel!!! I'll be 31 in April, so I'll always be older! bring on the varicose veins.
Hahaha. Love this so much. I totally relate to it all. Still laughing at the Rosie picture. Hilarious.
Love you!
xoxoxo
ok #1 love the picture of Rosie, that was funny. #2 What a rude comment from the store clerk.
#3 Just remember you will always be beautiful and young to your husband and that is all that matters. #4 I think you are darling and you need to embrace your 30's... cuz 40 is not something I am looking forward too!! :)
Happy Birthday girl! Your post was so funny. I've had a few surprise window reflection experiences, not very pleasant. I'm turning 32 next week. 30 wasn't so bad for me, but I really don't like 32. But I'll take 30's over 20's any day - life just gets better, don't you think? Give those skinny jeans another chance, they'll grow on you. And I KNOW you look adorable in them - especially with that cute new body of yours. I remember when capris first came out and I felt so silly wearing those, and now I can't imagine life without them. You can get those skinny jeans altered to your height for less than $15 (ask for the fancy hem so you still keep the original stitching on the jeans). And you are not too old for a Hurley sweatshirt, come on! That girl is an idiot (sorry).
You are hilarious!
Imagine what we'll be saying when we wake up 60 years old one day! We may not be donning the skinny jeans with our sagging old lady butts, but we can make a pact to avoid embroidered sweatshirts! ;)
Love you!
I am dying! That was the most hilarious post ever! Getting older really does suck...I feel for you. And I am also the one to run errands with no make-up...it's kind of sad that I have given up on caring. And I can't believe the girl at PacSun! I would have smacked her in the face! You are perfect at 30!
you look awesome for 30!!
i would have smacked the lady in the store. tell tyler no more shopping there!
Hahaha! Oh man, so how I am feeling! I have a few more months till the 3.0. (10 to be exact but who's counting? Heh...) but I am FEELING it girl! Ditto to all. Sigh... But thanks for making me laugh about it.
You are making me laugh my head off!! I freakin love you Nats. And I seriously do look like Rosie O'Donnell when I don't have my make up on, so that should make you feel better. What a riot. Thanks for the grins n' giggles (Tyler's favorite cookie from the past). Too funny.
Happy belated birthday! I love your observations. (Was that pic a cross of Rosie O'Donnell and that one terrorist dude???) That's so funny that the salesperson told you your sweatshirt was too youthful. Ryan and I will be joining you in thirtyhood very soon. I just can't believe the twenties are over. . . .
Happy birthday! Love these stories - thanks a ton for the laugh. Pretty sure that Rosie O'Donnell picture has scared me silly. :)
I joined the 30 club in Oct but people haven't said anything to me. Actually they still think I'm 21. They don't take me seriously, like I'm not an adult yet? Or something? Some day it will be a good thing to look young, right? I don't think you look 30 AT ALL!!! You are still as beautiful as you were in 232! Sure love you Nats!
Really? Did she really say that to you? Please tell me I'm not doomed to JCPenney and Sears from here on out. And the Rosie pic is halarious. Reminds me of the days we let it all grow out and took our coupons to the laser place. And we were only 20 then. Darn! This should make you feel better--I found a white hair. It was over a year ago. I keep finding white hairs. Of course they decide to plant themselves on the front of my head--right at my part. I changed my part. Then they started growing there too. Oh well . . . here comes the purple dye.
Welcome to the 30's club. Someday when you are celebrating your 40th birthday you'll look back at your 30th birthday and realize it wasn't too bad! Thanks for the update on your birthday - looks like fun! Love you and hope you had a good visit with Grandma Linda and Grandpa Steve.
