Tyler and Whitney's back-to-back birthdays are over. Here is a recap; sorry if you don't like collages. I find that it's the easiest way for me to organize my thoughts and not have to upload tons of pictures up here. (Click the collages if you want to see more detail.)
Tyler kind of had his birthday off from work. He was told he didn't have to go into the city as long as he finished his required reading at home. So Tyler got to volunteer in Whitney's preschool class that morning, and then we all met for lunch at In N Out.
After lunch, I had a few errands to run for Whitney's birthday, so Tyler took the kids over to some baseball fields by the library to play for a while. After I took care of my things, I met up with them and then took the kids home for naps while Tyler got his studying done.
When Tyler's studying was complete, he came home for a simple dinner and birthday cake. Tyler had been craving this Turtle Cake that he and his freshman year roommate ate in one night. So I got in touch with Jeremy D, and he came through with the recipe for Tyler's big day. It was awesome! The leftover cake in the fridge the day after was even better than fresh out of the oven. I'm so glad we gave away some of the leftovers, or for sure our guts would have turned into turtle cakes.
The next day was Whitney's BIG day! We woke her up singing to her with breakfast. Unfortunately the pumpkin chocolate chip muffins she requested were not made because mommy used the last bag of chocolate chips for her preschool birthday treat to share the day before--DOH! So we gave her some Fruity Pebbles which she was just as happy about. Phew! I'm glad I didn't get busted for not obeying the birthday list she gave me.
After breakfast she went on a hunt to find her presents. Cole gave her the "girl Legos" she wanted, Annie gave her a princess hat (Whitney was the only one in the family without a hat), and Tyler & I got her a new bike. We sold her old 12" bike last fall, so this new 16" bike is just right for her.
After presents, we walked over to the St. Patrick's Day Parade with Whitney riding her new bike. We conveniently stopped at a spot close by the McDonald's (where Whitney had requested her birthday lunch) and the grocery store (where Tyler walked over during the parade to get some last minute party items).

We made it back home with about an hour to spare before Whitney's party started. I dropped Annie off at my sister's house (smartest idea of the day--thanks, sis!), and then we got to work decorating our complex's clubhouse. We kept the party simple while fulfilling Whitney's dreams to have a Tinkerbell theme with face painting and a pinata. Tyler was a pro at painting faces, and Whitney & I made a homemade pinata for the event because the Tinkerbell pinatas we saw at the store were puny and wimpy for the $20 asking price. Really, who wants to fork over $20 for a little 7-8 inch pull string pinata? Not us. We needed something that would dump a lot of candy and that the kids could give a good beating without breaking our bank.
Thank you, wikihow for teaching me how to make our first pinata. It was really easy, and super ghetto. It obviously didn't win a prize for the fanciest or most beautiful, but it was definitely the best price for us. I would bet that our 8 cent pinata gave us a lot more bang (literally) for our buck than the teeny Tinkerbell one would have; however, it was definitely lacking in the aesthetic department. I'm hesitant to post pictures because of how truly ghetto the pinata was and also because at the party Tyler said, "Let's hurry and do the pinata before any parents come and see it!" ha ha ha. Thankfully the kids didn't make fun of us and they thought it was cool.
Really, we had a good time, and the pinata was surprisingly durable! Each kid got a turn to hit it 2 good times, and when everyone had a turn, they got to go again with 2 hits. And I think almost on cue, the pinata broke on the last kid's second turn. Thank you pinata for not letting us down!
Whitney was in heaven on her birthday reminding me constantly that "the birthday girl gets to choose everything!!" So the birthday girl chose her own clothes, meals, and unfortunately hairdo as well. She is not a big fan of getting her hair done, so wearing her hair down all day was heavenly for her.
March has been mostly a good month for us. Except for two minor things (Tyler taking a trip to the east coast for 4 days and being home today with sick kids), we really have had a great month.

Tyler said, "Let's hurry and do the pinata before any parents come and see it!" THIS QUOTE IS HILARIOUS!!! :) I have been here and done this. I know exactly how you and Tyler felt. heehee! (BTW the pinata doesn't look bad! It was cute in the picture.) :O)
Wow! Sounds like you guys have been busy! I can't believe Whitney is 5! That is crazy! Looks like she had a great birthday, you are an awesome mom! Making your own pinata! Too talented!
Those birthdays look so fun! Way to go on the pinata. What a good idea to make your own.
Way to go Natalie, You had quite the busy weekend. I love how Whitney had a birthday list that included the food she wanted for each meal. She is too cute. Great pictures! xoxo
That is too fun that you made your own pinata, and I bet it was so cool that Whitney and her mom made her birthday pinata! Baylee's last bday we wasted the $20 on a disney Princess pull string one, and I saved the ghettoness for her castle cake I attempted to make. But your pinata at least looks good! We miss you guys and hope you are doing well! I can't believe how big your kids are getting!
Natalie sounds like you helped make both Tyler and Whitney's birthday's special. You'll have to email the recipe of the turtle cake -- it sounds like something yummy I'd love to try. I'm super impressed about you guys making your own pinata for Whitney's birthday -- what a good memory she will have of doing a project like that with her Mom -- amazing. It was fun having Tyler out here in VA -- we wish you and the kids could have come -- sorry to hear your kids were sick.
Natalie your pinata looks great. We clicked on it to see more detail. Last year for Joseph's birthday we made him a baseball pinata. I wanted to make sure it lasted so we did a lot of layers of newspaper. We finally had to get a metal bat to break the thing open. But we had a great time.
wowsers! you guys definately have your own march madness! i would go bonkers with so many birthdays so close!! how fun though!
your kids are so cute and I love the pinata!
your march sounds crazy like mine! sarah's party was last weekend and britten's today!! pure craziness! britten has been riding a 12 inch bike too and he is 6 now! he is getting a new bike from my parents too! your kids are truly adorable and i love your pictures!! and collages! you are awesome!
Par-tay! Girl, you are the queen! I think that pinata is pretty cute actually. What's with all the ghetto remarks? I love the fun colors and stripes!
And can I just say that I LOVE th epicture of Annie muchin on that burger. What a fun idea to hide the presents. I'm gonna remember that one.
Happy Bday Ty and Whit!
Your pinata comments made me laugh. You guys rock! That's something I would do. Why spend 20 bucks on something kids are meant to beat the crap out of? I also loved that Whitney had every detail of her birthday planned. You can tell she must have been dreaming of her special day for weeks! Happy birthday, Tyler and Whitney!
Natalie, I can't believe how busy you are! Yet you still do it all. What an awesome time for you guys with the birthdays. And I LOVE the pinata idea - I have never even thought of making my own!
Things are {slightly} calming down around here, so we'll need to get together soon, especially as it's kinda warming up.
Excuse me? Your pinata is AWESOME, show that baby off. Go SuperMom; you've inspired me to make one if my kids ever ask for one. I had to chuckle at Whitney reminding you all day that the birthday girl gets to choose--that is sooooo Elle! They are so clever and know how to work it!
Eliza did great with the ear piercing. Last fall she said she wanted to get them done here in Utah, we went just the two of us and she left in tears after losing her nerve. I think having her aunts and grandma there made a difference, and I kept telling her it was up to her and not a big deal. She gets really worked up about stuff. But she didn't shed a tear or anything, we just all started cheering and she was thrilled when she got a hold of a mirror. I'm okay with it b/c she is pretty tomboy; I'm not worried about her becoming super-vain all of a sudden. Sarah plays with Elle's play makeup more than Elle does. :)
***Also, go on a weekend when they'll most likely have 2 people working, and request that they do both at the same time. They're used to that. I have a friend whose daughter wigged out after one and they ended up having to come back the next day to do the other! Ow!
Sorry, me again. Would you mind posting the turtle cake recipe? We love all things turtle; I always bought those turtles in the striped bags from the BYU bookstore. Ah, the memories. I still remember your turkey meatloaf rocked after I had Eliza, yum yum. I don't think I shared with anybody, oink.
I love your picture collages because they show so many different aspects of the day. THANK YOU for including a picture of the pinata...it was, of course, the first thing I looked for. I was laughing at Tyler's quote too. Props to you for making it...I'm impressed. I love that Whitney gave you a list of birthday wishes. She looked so happy in all those pictures...way to make it a great day! oh, and I am jealous of the In-N-Out :).
I love your post! Travis and I were at dinner the other night and saw the most adorable little girl ever and Travis just couldn't stop looking at her and when I looked closer she looked EXACTLY like your little Annie! I told him it's a sign that we need to fly out there to visit you guys soon! Sound good?
