A 30 year old man's birthday wish: a butterfly party!

I thought I was off the hook for throwing a 6 year old party this year because Whitney's birthday fell on a Sunday. I told Whitney that since daddy's birthday was on Saturday (the day before hers), then we would be celebrating his (30th!!) birthday and then Sunday we'd do a small family thing for her. Whitney was cool with it, but Tyler told me that all he wanted for his 30th birthday was for Whitney to have a fun and memorable birthday party.

Soooo, we killed two birthdays with one stone and spent Tyler's day throwing Whitney a butterfly party at a local park. We kept it simple and very budget friendly. Whitney prayed her little heart out for good weather, and we enjoyed beautiful blue skies and sunshine for the party.

Here are some highlights:

The week before her party, Whitney & I made a butterfly pinata. This cost literally pennies, as you can probably tell! Whitney chose the colors, added the polka dots, and directed the way as we created together. Despite taking a few afternoons to make (drying the paper mache between layers and gluing on layer after layer of tissue paper), it was still really fun.

We started off the morning and woke up Daddy with breakfast in bed...

Then it was off to prepare for and have Whitney's party. My sister was an angel and watched Annie for me so we could enjoy a toddler-free celebration. Cole had a great time at the party despite being the only little boy there.

Tyler organized an obstacle course (Whitney's favorite thing to do whether indoors or out):

We had the girls play some butterfly-themed games. Pictured below: cocoon wrapping. (Not pictured: butterfly beanbag toss with butterfly nets--similar to the egg toss game)

We made our own butterfly birthday cake and snacks. The picnic lunch featured PBJ and ham and cheese sandwiches in the shape of butterflies, chips, and fruit.
Don't look too closely at the cake. Annie pawed off some of the frosting and ate candy around the edges while I was at the gym that morning. I nearly died when I walked in the house and saw her face covered in purple frosting... but we fixed the problem. I should have stopped to take a picture of her and the messy cake, but the stress level was a bit too high right then for me to think clearly.

After Whitney's party, Tyler's birthday dinner request was BJ's Brewhouse (not for the brew, folks), so we drove out there for some great pizza and salad with the kids.

Sunday morning, Whitney woke up to breakfast in bed... well, on the floor. Annie must have been being too loud in the girls' room, so Whitney took matters into her own hands and went and slept on Cole's floor.
Mmmmm... scrambled eggs with ketchup, pumpkin muffins with chocolate chips, and a smoothie. Not a combo I would really think to put together, but Whitney was the birthday girl, and we obey the birthday requests! ;)

So excited to open presents!!!!!!!

Her main present from us was her first pet--caterpillars that will grow into REAL BUTTERFLIES!
It is exciting watching these little critters grow each day. I will have to post again after they morph!

These back-to-back birthdays can be difficult to juggle, but we sure had a great time celebrating these two special people in March!

We've got those back-to-back birthdays in May and it is always really tricky to juggle. So cute that Tyler wanted to sacrifice his celebrations for Whitney. Cutest Daddy. And, the party looks so fun. The pinata, the cake, the games and the REAL butterflies? I think you certainly accomplished the task! Happy #30 Tyler and Happy #6 Whitney!

Love you guys.

p.s. I can't get over how much older Whitney looks with her bangs. She's officially a big girl. Such a cute one.

I'm really excited to see the birthday update. Looks like a fun and creative party -- a good birthday for both Whitney and Tyler. The real butterflys are really a fun project- we have done it a few times with our family loved it. The boys loved touching the butterflys and feeding them cut up oranges.

BRILLIANT! Love the creative pinata, the caterpillars/butterflies gift, and the smart daddy. (A smart daddy knows any day is great when a kid gets her dream party!)

I can't believe Tyler's only 30. What an accomplished guy. And, Nat, you're an awesome mom. You pulled off a great couple of birthdays.

Seriously you made your own pinata? That is too cool. What a fun day for Whitney. I love planning bday parties. Tyler is a good daddy to sacrifice his day for Whitney!!

What a great idea! Might have to steal the butterfly party for one of my girls in the future! (Love the cocoon wrap! So funny!) My kids got caterpillars for Easter, you'll have to let me know how you transfer the chrysalis to the butterfly habitat, I'm a little worries about that part! How glad are you that we can get away with giving our kids bugs for pets?! (No puppy no puppy no puppy...) :)

Whitney is looking so grown up! I'm so happy that Lindy could hook you up with some house projects. I love when she comes around for that reason! Impressive. Cutest little b-day party. You're a great mother Nats!

What a cute pinata! It is fun to hear about all you are doing. Jacks just gave himself a haircut as well. Luckily our Jos alerted us and it wasn't too bad.
