Hecka Juicy

My sweet mother-in-law taught me how to pick a good watermelon. She said that she always looks for the bee stings. So I was in the grocery store the other day trying to find just the right watermelon with lots of bee stings on it. I came across this guy:
It had lots of brown bee stings, but I had never seen these black looking bugs on one before.
So I asked the kind girl in the produce section if she knew how to pick a good watermelon. And boy, did she ever! She was so helpful and EXCITED to show me the tricks of the trade. The first thing she said was to look for bee stings (just like my MIL taught me!), and then she saw this watermelon that I chose and said, "That's perfect!" She assured me that the black things weren't bugs and that it was just hardened juice from when the bees were stinging it. She also did the classic "knocking" on the melon (I still don't get what sound to listen for), and she told me again that we picked a winner. As we were walking away from the produce lady, Whitney said, "Mom, I don't want to get that watermelon with all the bee poop on it."

So I get to the check-out lady and she takes the watermelon off the belt to type in the code and says, "Mmm, mmm, mmm.... you know 'dis watermelon's gonna be HECKA juicy, right?!" Oh my goodness. I loved how she was so excited about my watermelon too. Her comment made me smile the whole drive home.

And for the record, Tyler said that this was definitely on the list of the top 5 watermelons he has ever tasted. After that compliment from him, I told him this story about all the hard work ;) that went into choosing the perfect one. It was hecka juicy, for sure!

I've always wondered really how to pick a good watermelon. I usually just stand there and knock on all of them looking around at everyone like I really know what the heck I'm doing. Then I look over when I think I hear a lower sound than the others and act like I've really discovered something special and pick it up but in all actuality, I have no idea what I am doing. Good to know about bee stings even though I still have no idea what you are talking about=)! Thanks for the advice.

This is just the info I needed--thanks for including pictures. It's always been "eeny, meeny, miney, mo", for me.

I guess I should have clarified the bee stings: they're the rough brown lines under these black "bugs". On this watermelon, imagine washing off the black things and voila! you'll see the "normal" looking tan bee stings. This one just happened to have fresher (black) bee stings.

In some ways it really makes sense--choose the one you're most likely to not pick? I love Whitney's comment.

We bought a watermelon today and looked for a nice, ugly, beestung one just like the one in the picture. I think it's gonna be a goot one.
