I don't think I've mentioned yet that Tyler has been an official 2nd year resident for over 3 months. He's no longer the runt, gopher, lowest-man-on-the-totem pole, or "scut-monkey" as they call it in the hospital. He's moved up a small notch on the scale of residents and even got a pay raise too. (Bonus!)
In honor of reaching triple digits, I thought I'd share some of my favorite stories from Tyler's first year. Without breaking any HIPA rules, here ya go:
- Tyler got called in the middle of the night to sew on someone's ear after a bad car accident. That was only about 2-3 weeks out of DENTAL school. Baptism by fire.
- One day Tyler had a hard patient to work with. It got even harder after the patient told Tyler, "I just defecated myself!"
- A lady came in to have all of her nasty decayed teeth extracted in preparation for a denture. When Tyler walked in the room and saw her from a few feet away, he thought it was funny that she had two white Chiclet bunny front teeth. As he looked in her mouth to inspect further, he said, "So who did your front...veneers?" She proudly explained that she had done her own aesthetic dentistry by using press-on nails! YES. For years she had been gluing on her whole set of "teeth" every day. Needless to say, the combination of super glue and poor hygiene didn't do wonders for her.
- One of my personal favorites was hearing Tyler call his chief and ask, "So...are we rounding on puss face tomorrow?"
- Tyler was in the middle of a procedure when his hospital pager went off. The patient and her spouse started laughing at Tyler saying, "HA! You still have a beeper!!" They thought Tyler was SO last century.
- This one didn't happen directly to Tyler, but was told from the previous residents: some guy swindled a blank prescription paper and went to fill 'the doctor's orders.' He was appalled that the pharmacist wouldn't fill his "1 pound of Mofeen" and had the audacity to question the legitimacy of his prescription.
- Every year all the oral surgery residents in the country take a test to see how they're doing. As a first year resident, you would probably score in the 25th percentile, a 2nd year resident in the 50th, and so on. It's just a test to gauge how you're doing compared to other residents. So when Tyler got his results back and he was in the 94th percentile, we were FLOORED!! That meant Tyler was as smart as a 4th year resident! Tyler was so excited that he had learned so much in his first year of residency and even said, "Man, and I didn't even study that hard for it!" Well, our bubble was burst about 2 days later when Tyler was inspecting his score more closely. He noticed that he had received the score for the other Tyler Nelson (in a different oral surgery residency--yes, same name and middle initial) who went to an Ivy League school. The Tylers got in contact with each other and the people who are in charge of the test, and then got their real scores... Unfortuately Tyler didn't get a 94, but he passed, so we were happy still.
- About a month ago, Tyler was on call. He sewed on 2 ears, wired one jaw shut, and drained one guy's mysteriously puffy nose (septum). All in a day's work!
1 year down, 3 to go! Well technically, 2 years & 8+ months! WOO-hoo!

Oh man, those stories are the best. Sorry to have grossed you out with too much info on my blog. Love the pic of Annie and Whit on the side now. Such beautiful girls. Love the press-on nail teeth. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And the mofeen was great too.
Wow! Now I know that press on nails aren't the answer, thanks!
Really though, kudos to you guys! That is hard work and the world is a better place because of your diligence!!
Wow Tyler has had lots of adventures in his residency -- it was fun to hear what he has been doing. I didn't know Tyler knew how to sew ears back on? Wow you are awesome Tyler. Thanks for sharing some highlihgts with us Natalie.
I still can't get over the "Mofeen!" Gotta love Highland! Congrats on the countdown... Remember how three years of dental school flew by (or maybe it dragged on for you, Natalie). It'll be over before you know it!
Thanks for the laugh! Those are some GREAT stories. Makes me miss being near Oakland. I'm so glad I get to be hearing more stories for the next 999 days!
wow! i guess it would take the right person to do that job! way to go tyler!!! that is so funny about the scores! you guys are awesome!
So funny and SO GROSS! Congrats on getting into the hundreds! And yet again, I'm so thankful I didn't marry the brain surgeon my mother always thought I would marry... ;)
Thanks for the eye-opening glimpse into Tyler's life--I think I'd forgotten or hadn't heard some of those stories. You guys will probably look back on these "adventures in Residency" days and be amazed at what you accomplished together. You are an inspiring team!
Those are worthy of a good email forward - you should spam us all next year:) And now I know who to call if my ear falls off! I had no idea that was such a common issue.
I made homemade oreos with a recipe that had me make cookies out of a cakebox, so I thought of you Nats! Those and crockpot surprise bring back memories.
Dang funny stuff!
What's with the ears? What a handy guy to have around!
HAHAHAHA Okay that was the funniest post ever. Dan's going to love these stories. A POUND of MOfeen?? He was so discreet.. I wonder how they were ever on to him?
Wow...I'm glad they're paying him bigger bucks for taking care of all of those ailments...ugh. That's exciting that he's getting close. Y'all have worked so hard...what a celebration it will be when he's done!
Drew and I just read those together and laughed our heads off. That was awesome reading. My favorite was the press on nails and the Mofeen. That's seriously so awesome.
Way to go Tyler. It's a long hall but someone's gotta do it and that person is you. You're always a 94%+ in our book! :)
