I've never seen this done before, but the schools out here have assessments on the two days before the 1st day of school. You go online and sign up for a 1/2 hour slot to meet with the teacher anytime during those two days.
This is for both new students (us) and returning students. The teacher took about 15 minutes getting to know the kids, and then had them do some reading/asked them some questions to get a feel for where they are academically.
Not only was the assessment part of assessment day great, but I also LOVED how the school had us bring all of our school supplies on that day as well as take official school pictures on that day too. Brilliant!!
The night before the official 1st day of school, we went to one of those cook-in-front-of-you Japanese grill places and then went home for dad to give back-to-school blessings to anyone who wanted one.
On the OFFICIAL 1st day of 3rd grade, Whitney wanted her hair in a braid. She had planned out her shirt and earrings days in advance.
Cole just wanted to know if he could wear his Ninjago shirt every day of 1st grade.
After school was out, we met at the front of the school to walk home, and I could tell they had a SUPER 1st day!
These two little gals missed their big sister and couldn't wait to be reunited.
On the evening of the 1st day of school, the school held an ice cream social. We met Whitney's new friend, and everyone in Whitney's class thought they were twins. I don't see the resemblance that much, but she & Whitney think it's fun that they share the same last name and were born 3 days apart. :)
Did I mention that we live across the street from the school?!?!!?!? It's the best!

Wow, so awesome! I'm so glad ya'll are adjusting well and loving it out there. Such beautiful, grown up kids!!
Sounds like a great school! Love their choices of clothes for the first day. I'm curious if Cole has tried to wear his Ninjago shirt ever day ;)
